From 1938 to 1939 Peter Lorre starred in five films playing the enigmatic and resourceful Mr. Moto, an agent of the Imperial Japanese government and private detective extraordinaire. Always out rescuing damsels in distress or foiling some plot for world domination. The big attraction for Mr. Moto films was the Judo action. Every thriller had at least two or three fight scenes in which Mr. Moto would demonstrate his superior fighting skills, either in self-defense or to silence some critic. It gave hope to the little guy, those small of stature, that they could find a martial art enabling him to overcome even larger and more powerful foes, like the bullies who often tormented them.
PLUS: Submission Techniques; Choke Holds; Self-Defense Against Guns and Knives
Judo, the gentle way, was developed by Jigaro Kano as a sport form of Jujitsu, the Samurai art of bone breaking. The techniques were designed for friendly competition, but could also be turned into a deadly fighting system if need be. Before World War II there were very few martial arts schools in America, boxing and wrestling being the standard of the day. Judo was new, something mysterious from a far off land. In time, many other Oriental martial arts were discovered, all with much to offer the serious student.
