According to Wikipedia, "Dragon Lady" is a term coined in a comic strip called Terry and the Pirates to describe Asian women as "strong, deceitful, domineering, mysterious and sexually alluring." The Chinese, however, have used this phrase for centuries. The Japanese use the term to describe Kunoichi, female spies and assassins of feudal Ninja clans, who were known for their ability to infiltrate anywhere and kill enemy warlords in their sleep; without leaving a trace of how it was done.

In olden times, women were seldom thought as equal. Very often, an attractive serving girl would be seen by the Daimyo, local baron, who would command that she be sent to him that evening for his personal pleasure. Those selected for this singular honor were seldom pleased with the prospect.
Of course, this played well into the hands of the Ninja, who treated their women with respect and trained them in martial arts skills. A clever Dragon Lady could easily infiltrate her way into the local villain’s castle and make herself known to ensnare the evil warlord in his own trap by pretending to be compliant and submissive. This would allow her to penetrate the deepest recesses of the castle and be alone with her intended victim.
