MILITARY TACTICS
The Roman military made use of all these tools and techniques mentioned to secure victory in battle. They also made sure that their battles were meticulously planned, including a pre-war planning stage when tactics were discussed. After deciding on their tactics, deployment of the soldiers was the next phase.
A Roman soldier, starting his service, took a military oath, initially of allegiance to the Senate and the Roman People, and during the empire to his general and ruler. It was the so-called sacramentum. According to this oath, the legionary agreed to all suffering, punishments, and even death – related to the defense of these values. When joining the legions, Roman citizens did it voluntarily, and therefore they were not forced soldiers to join the army, but people who were fully responsible for their decisions. After all, it was a professional army. They lived on it.
Roman soldiers had different service requirements based on their role and social status. Infantry soldiers generally served for sixteen years, while cavalrymen served for ten years. The census, which was a measure of wealth, played a crucial role in determining the type of service; those with fewer resources were often relegated to roles that did not require personal equipment, such as naval service.
Auxiliary troops, who were non-citizens, often had longer service terms and were promised Roman citizenship upon completion of their service. This system of extended service provided a steady supply of trained troops while providing a recruitment incentive and loyalty through the promise of citizenship.
