Yim Wing Chun was a beautiful young girl living in 19th century China. She made a living selling tofu, with her father. Well known for her beauty, the story goes that a local warlord tried to make her marry him. But, she trained with a enigmatic Shaolin nun named Ng Mui, and used her art to defend herself against the unwanted suitor and defeat him. Some accounts claim that Ng Mui taught Yim martial arts specifically for the purpose of defending herself against the man's unwanted advances. Yim later married her childhood sweetheart and taught him this new system, which he named Wing Chun, after his wife. This is the story of how it developed and why it is so well respected in the martial arts community.
Wing Chun differs greatly from other Kung Fu styles of the time in its theory, the structure of its movements and means of generating force. It was not based on imitation like so many others, directly copying animal movements, but on natural, scientific laws, eliminating unnecessary movements to overcome and generate force in the most efficient way.
Wing Chun is one of the youngest and most contemporary styles of Kung Fu, having been constantly refined and adapted over its 300 years of existence. Considered to be one of the three great martial art styles of Southern China, it was founded during the Qing Dynasty by a Buddhist nun, Ng Mui, of the famed Shaolin Temple. Ng Mui, one of the top five fighters of the day, aimed at designing a more effective fighting method which did not rely on brute strength to be effective. This style of martial art found new life in the films of Bruce Lee, who had trained with the legendary Grandmaster Ip Man in Hong Kong and portrayed many iconic Chinese heroes on screen. But, it was already well known and very popular in many Chinese schools. Now, its secrets can be yours!
