Anatomy of a Throat Punch is a study in how to defend yourself without learning martial arts. It is based on a movie called Joe Somebody, starring Tim Allen. It is the story of an innocent milquetoast character who is forced into a fight with a bully. Given a few days before the match, he reaches out to a local Karate school run by Jim Belushi to learn martial arts.
Belushi, a somewhat slack parody of a Sensei tells him, “You haven’t got time for that, just do this!”
Whereupon he strikes Allen in the throat with a light blow, causing him to gag and feel as if he can’t breathe.
As he is gasping for breath, Belushi says, “You’ll be all right in a minute, but boy that works great doesn’t it?”
A Throat Punch takes only an instant. It is a simple and effective non-lethal self-defense technique that can be learned in seconds. It is one of the simplest, most direct, and potentially decisive targets in personal combat. And, it doesn’t take years to learn.
Drawing from traditional martial-arts principles and practical self-defense concepts, the book examines a variety of hand formations, striking surfaces, angles, and methods of delivering a blow. It also considers the importance of distance, body alignment, awareness, and follow-through, while placing the throat within the larger framework of vulnerable targets and defensive strategy.
Ashida Kim explains the simplest self-defense technique known to man, the Throat Punch. A non-lethal, pressure point strike that makes the attacker cough, and gag, and be unable to breathe for a few minutes.
Whether approached as a martial-arts reference, a study of human anatomy in combat, or a practical self-defense manual, this book presents the throat punch as a technique whose effectiveness depends upon knowledge, precision, timing, and disciplined training. Or, simply being willing to stike first.
In combat, knowledge of the human body, knowing where to strike, and when to strike, is just as important as knowing how to strike.
