If you are using a Wheelchair, odds are you have limited mobility due to back and or leg pain and weakness. Bullies, robbers, muggers and thieves often see this as a weakness making you vulnerable to attack. Unaware that you are armed with a quite formidable weapon; and know how to use it. There are plenty of books on how to use a cane to protect yourself, but few on how to use a Wheelchair. UNTIL NOW!
Ko Hung Lao
The wheelchair introduces circumstances that do not ordinarily exist for a standing practitioner. One of the most important is the possibility of having the chair itself suddenly moved by another person. An attacker may approach from behind and seize the chair or its handles, attempting to push the wheelchair rapidly in an unwanted direction. Because the defender is seated and attached to the movement of the chair, the attack affects both the person's balance and position at the same time. It takes away their sense of control and can leave them feeling exposed, powerless or even injured. Unfortunately, this is one of the most common attacks against people in wheelchairs.
This manual illustrates a variety of techniques to prevent that from happening:
Some of these methods may seem brutal or violent, that is because self-defense is not a game. You must be prepared to disable the attacker so you can escape to safety or help. Sometimes that requires inflicting pain or breaking his balance. Ask yourself, "Is it better to be killed than fight back?" Then you will know how much force to use.
The techniques described in this book are intended solely for lawful self-defense, educational study, and supervised training. Martial arts training involves inherent risks of serious injury or death. Practice responsibly, use appropriate safety equipment, and train under qualified instruction whenever possible.
Always comply with applicable laws regarding the use of force. Use physical force only when reasonably necessary and legally justified. Avoid violence whenever possible and seek to de-escalate conflict whenever it is safe to do so.
