Ever wonder why it was once forbidden to speak the word shinobi in feudal Japan? The Emperor Hideyoshi had decimated the Iga and Koga Ninja clans during his Sword Hunt of 1588. There were only a few survivors. Everyone had feared their power after helping Oda Nobunaga unify the warring tribes of Japan into a nation.
But, the final straw was when fifty Ninja looted the arsenal from Osaka castle during a daring midnight raid. Hideyoshi became so enraged at the affront that he declared anyone speaking the word "shinobi" was to be put to death immediately.
In the end the mission was very successful. But, it didn’t stop the planned invasion of Korea. While the Ninja had looted a large cache of arms from Osaka, the Emperor had an army of more than 200,000 men, not all of whom were posted in the city. Those forces were able to re-supply the soldiers whose weapons had been stolen. Still, the raid became the stuff of legends.
The Secret Tricks and Methods Used, including:
A fascinating glimpse into the political intrigue and espionage of feudal Japan!
Ninja were the most feared spies and assassins of feudal Japan. They were instrumental in helping Oda Nobunaga unite the warring tribes into a nation. When he was killed by a disloyal retainer, Nobunaga’s successor, Toyotomi Hideyoshi began to fear the Ninja might one day decide to topple his empire. In 1588, he instituted one of the country’s many “sword hunts,” meaning to disarm the peasant population and prevent any uprising or rebellion.
Part of this involved destroying the Ninja clans in Iga and Koga provinces. A 20,000 man army swept through the territory, killing everyone in sight. Most of the clans were decimated, many were completely lost, along with them, countless techniques and knowledge.
"To be a Ninja, one must be strong, one must know, one must dare and one must be silent." The Ninja remained strong and persevered after the decimating Sword Hunt. They knew because they had sources of intelligence and were able to reason. They dared because they valued peace and harmony above all else. They were silent, taking no credit for what they had done.
