The tradition of certification began in ancient China where patients would write a testimonial to the physicians who healed them. These would be posted on the clinic walls for all to see as validation of the doctor's skill. Later on, contestants in "death matches" between masters signed documents as waivers in the event they were killed or crippled so their opponents could not be held accountable. These "death warrants" would then be displayed in the training hall of the victor.
Your school's certificate should reflect the goals and aspirations of your chosen art, using the symbols that represent the spirit and tradition of your system. Your signature is your endorsement and recognition of your student's level of skill and ability, not to be awarded lightly, only to those who are worthy. If you have a logo or if you are sanctioned to use those of your Sensei or style, we can help you design an award that your students will proud to display. If not, we can help you create one.
Many years ago, the U.S. Department of Education created an educational standard known as CLEP, the Credit for Life Experience Program, whereby applicants could receive certification or diplomas from accredited institutions based on what they had learned in life that might have been denied them by circumstance or opportunity.
This program was designed to recognize skill and ability gained through patient practice, personal experience and time-in-grade, the true meaning of the Chinese term "kung fu," so that all might participate and contribute according to their resources and inclination. The Great Work is sharing this knowledge with others.
These Memberships identify the Bearer as a Certified Martial Artist of Specified Name, Rank, and Style, Registered "on file" with our Martial Arts Fraternity designated on your Official Membership Certification and placed in your Permanent Record with our Fellowship so that your Credentials can be validated, verified, or confirmed with our Central Office upon request. If you wish, you may include a photo and copies of any previous certificates you want as part of your resume. In some countries, like the UK and Australia, such proof of membership and a Dojo affiliation are required merely to buy or carry practice weapons for training purposes, even more so for self-defense!

Teachers have great power. The power to spark imagination and dreams, to help others grow, and grow themselves in the process. They teach skills and ideas that last a lifetime and guide minds, young or old, on a personal quest to change their lives for the better. Thus helping to shape the future by setting a good example and helping others.
There is no more noble cause than this.
If you have a Sensei or teacher you would like to honor, the DOJO Awards program offers the following certifications:
These Awards are a complimentary service initiated so that students might express their gratitude, respect, and admiration for those Sensei who have truly performed above and beyond the normal call of martial arts instruction and achieved a level of skill and understanding that enables them to shine in the eyes of those who come to learn from them. These accolades are not granted lightly nor without sufficient petition and documentation of the individual’s service and contribution. The process is much like that used in military organizations for suggesting commendations, letters of merit, or medals for bravery and valor. The customary procedure is for students of a Dojo to sign the certificate and present it to their Sensei in a formal or informal ceremony.
